WHAT IS BOTOX AND IS IT RIGHT FOR ME?
As we age, our skin shows the signs first. As skin gets thinner, less elastic, and drier, it’s more difficult for it to hide the signs of damage. Over time, this creates wrinkles, lines, and creases, most noticeably on the face.
For many, the wrinkles around their eyes and mouth make them self-conscious. While no one can avoid aging entirely, we all know individuals who look the same or even better as they age. What’s their secret? For some, it’s Botox.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
Botox is one of our most popular services at our med spa in Scottsdale. Botox is the brand name for botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is created by Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that is found in nature.
Botox is injected into the skin, and can be used for several different types of treatment, including wrinkle treatment. Essentially, Botox paralyzes muscles, causing them not to move for several months. While high doses can be toxic, for the purpose of wrinkle reduction, only very small amounts are used. Because the muscles are paralyzed, it prevents the skin from wrinkling due to certain facial expressions.
While this may cause some to hesitate, rest assured that Botox is considered safe, particularly when compared to other invasive cosmetic procedures. The risk involved with getting Botox is so low that less than one percent of all patients experience problems after their treatment.
IS BOTOX RIGHT FOR ME?
If you are wondering whether or not Botox is the way to go, think about what makes you want to get it. If you’re looking to boost your confidence by looking younger, we are happy to help you. However, if you are feeling pressured by society or by other people to receive Botox, we would like to reassure you that Botox is a personal choice. You don’t have to get it at any age, and there are alternative options if you don’t think it’s right for you.
WHAT AGES SHOULD GET BOTOX?
Again, you don’t have to get Botox if you don’t want to, and if it’s something you do want, you can get it at any age. However, we generally don’t recommend Botox to women under 30. This is because in your 20s and teens, it’s best to focus on the lifestyle factors that contribute to signs of aging for a preventive approach.
After age 30, the production of collagen begins to slow, which is why many people begin to notice signs of aging during this time in their lives. This is when Botox can be the most impactful.
THE RISKS OF BOTOX
Like any type of procedure, Botox does come with certain risks. Though it is generally considered safe by doctors, most research needs to be done into the long-term effects of the treatment.
If Botox is injected in the wrong place or too much is used, it can cause issues with asymmetry of the face, drooping, or difficulty making facial expressions. Fortunately, the effects of Botox are temporary, so with time, these issues fade. Some patients experience light bruising after injections, but these heal within days.
CREATING A BOTOX PLAN
The most important part of ensuring that your Botox procedure offers the results you seek is by creating a plan with your doctor. At our med spa in Scottsdale, we prioritize meeting with you to discuss what your goals are, what other treatments may be necessary for you, your budget, and your lifestyle. Your doctor will also assume the muscles in your face to determine whether or not Botox is appropriate for you.
